3.4.1 Key considerations beyond treatment recommendations

A number of factors should be considered at this stage:

  • the patient’s overall condition, life expectancy, personal preferences and decision- making capacity. Cancer Australia’s Lung cancer framework emphasises patient-centred care and to focus on the unique needs of each patient affected by lung cancer. Best practice patient-centred lung cancer care uses each individual patient’s experience to inform the care they receive (Cancer Australia 2018)
  • discussing the multidisciplinary team approach to care with the patient
  • appropriate and timely referral to an MDM
  • pregnancy and fertility
  • support with travel and accommodation
  • teleconferencing or videoconferencing as required
