6.4 Treatment
The extent of endometrial cancer recurrence should be determined using one or more of a CT scan, MRI or PET scan of the pelvis, abdomen and chest (Lin et al. 2018). Further investigations, such as a biopsy to confirm recurrent disease, should be considered based on a multidisciplinary team discussion.
Treatment will depend on the location, extent of recurrent or residual disease, previous management and the patient’s preferences.
In managing women with recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer, treatment may include these options:
- hormonal therapy
- radiation therapy
- chemotherapy
- surgery, which may be appropriate if the recurrence is isolated (Australian Cancer Survivorship Centre 2018).
The potential goals of treatment should be discussed, respecting the patient’s cultural values. Wherever possible, written information should be provided.
Encourage early referral to clinical trials or accepting an invitation to participate in research.
