5.3 Special considerations
Special considerations that need to be addressed at this stage may include loss of hormonal function following treatment that involves surgical or radiation therapy to the pelvic organs or chemotherapy that might induce premature menopause (Harris 2019); these require sensitive discussion. Symptoms associated with surgically induced menopause may be more severe than for women who go through natural menopause. Referral to either a physician with a special interest in menopause, a social worker, a psychologist or a psychiatrist may be appropriate (Harris 2019).
Issues of obesity may require referral to a dietitian, endocrinologist or bariatric service.
